Hot Details About the Long-Awaited 2017 Acura NSX

Author JoeC    Category News     Tags

2017-acura-nsxThe highly anticipated 2017 Acura NSX has finally made its debut, giving the motoring world the follow-up it’s been waiting for to one of the most significant sports cars of the 1990s.

This second-generation supercar comes to the road powered by a twin-turbocharged DOHC V6 engine that produces a dynamite 500 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and this baby’s top track speed is approximately 191 mph.

Way Outside the Box

In terms of its looks and powertrain, the new NSX is certainly not your typical vehicle.

In addition to the powerhouse twin-turbo engine, Honda has additionally added three electric motors—one on the engine and two on the front axle. These four power sources offer up a total system output of 573 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.

This four-motor hybrid system is combined with electronic all-wheel drive and a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Essentially, the new NSX offers up double the power of the original model.

Made in America

The new NSX models will be produced quite gradually. Once production is in full swing, Honda will build just eight of these models each day.

The next-generation NSX cars will be constructed at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. This facility boasts eight MIG welding robots—which is good, as the NSX chassis alone requires between 850 and 900 welds.

NSX production will also gobble up 4 gallons of paint per car, which will be applied in 11 layers over the body of each NSX.

According to Honda’s official website for the NSX, available exterior paint colors will include:

  • Curva Red
  • Berlina Black
  • 130R White
  • Source Silver Metallic
  • Casino White Pearl
  • Nord Gray Metallic
  • Valencia Red Pearl
  • Nouvelle Blue Pearl

When assembly concludes on a new NSX model, the final step is placing the car on a four-post shaker rig for 20 minutes, which simulates various road surfaces, after which the car is put through a “monsoon test,” exposing it to twice the highest rainfall amount to be recorded during a hurricane.

During Honda’s decade-long development of this new supercar, more than 250 prototypes were built in all—all of which are scheduled to be destroyed, save some models being saved for display.

Ready for the World’s First Brain-Powered Car?

Author JoeC    Category News, Technology     Tags

drivingThe age of tomorrow is here, it seems.

Futuristic automotive innovations may no longer be the stuff of science fiction. With inventions like self-driving vehicles already on the horizon from companies like Toyota, Nissan, and Tesla, other sci-fi-esque vehicle technology may be right around the corner, too.

From Gas-Powered to Brain-Powered

No, it isn’t a 1960s episode of The Jetsons. This is 2015, and the reality of a vehicle that is powered directly by a person’s brain may be much closer than we think.

A prototype of an automobile that is controlled by the brain signals of its driver has reportedly been developed by a team at Nankai University in China. The development team members are innovating technology that utilizes brain signals to make a vehicle stop, move forward and backward, and lock and unlock.

The project began due to a desire to enable physically handicapped people to drive. With the right technology, those who can’t operate an automobile with their arms, legs, hands, and feet could, with the existence of a brain-powered vehicle, roll out on the highway under the power of their minds.

How It Works

A member of the research team for the project reports that headgear worn by the driver is made up of 16 electroencephalogram sensors that perceive brain activity. Once brain signals are sent out, a computer then analyzes and interprets those signals, translating them into the appropriate commands for the vehicle.

The Future of Automobiles

The automotive industry is abuzz with innovation these days, with smart vehicles on the horizon from Google within the next five years and self-driving automobiles slated to show up from Toyota and Nissan by 2020.

The brain-powering technology from the team at Nankai University is most definitely still in the development stages. At this point, the test cars from Great Wall Motors can only drive in a straight line at the brain’s behest.

At present, no plans are in effect to manufacture this technology and make it available to the masses. But, down the road, brain-powered cars just might become the next big thing in the automotive world.

Bid Them Adieu: 10 Vehicles That Have Been Discontinued for 2016

Author JoeC    Category News     Tags

Prospective carWhether they vanish due to lack of consumer interest, disappear due to changing trends, or are whisked away to be revamped and renamed, discontinued vehicles are a reality of the ever-fickle automotive world.

For some vehicles, being discontinued is the end of the line; for others, it’s merely a hiatus, allowing dealers to offload surplus inventory while the model is refreshed to return the following year.

Be Gone With You

For 2016, the following 10 vehicles will be doing a vanishing act for one reason or another:

  • Toyota Venza: Toyota’s crossover version of the popular Camry didn’t hit the mark with drivers, with sales figures falling well behind its cousin the Highlander. For that reason, this midsize wagon will not be making an appearance in 2016.
  • Scion xB: Drivers can say sayonara to this Scion model, which has been bumped in favor of the new iM four-door hatchback that will debut in 2016.
  • Scion IQ: Another Scion bites the dust in 2016. The intelligence quotient of this microcar apparently did not add up for car buyers, and Scion is pulling its plug in the new model year.
  • Nissan Xterra: After 15 years and more than 750,000 models sold, Nissan’s truck-based sport utility vehicle has been bumped from the roster due to consumer migration toward compact crossover SUVs.
  • MINI Cooper Coupe and Roadster: Some underdog MINI models are getting the ax in 2016, beginning with the MINI Cooper Coupe and MINI Cooper Roadster.
  • Land Rover LR2: A newer, younger model—the Discovery Sport—is replacing this compact SUV, offering a family-friendly third seat the LR2 didn’t have. C’est la vie.
  • Jaguar XK: Following in the tire treads of the former Jaguar XKE, the XK will get the boot in 2016.
  • Acura Infiniti Q40: With consumers gravitating toward the Q50, the Infiniti Q40 compact sedan—which has already been through the makeover process, having transformed from its former G37 identity to its current incarnation—will shuffle off the automotive coil in 2016, with the Q30 model taking its place.
  • Honda Crosstour: American consumers never quite warmed to this wagon-esque rendition of the popular Accord. For that reason, Honda Crosstour, you have been chopped.
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class: This midsize SUV is being nudged aside in favor of the GLE-Class in a move that’s more of a renaming than a cancellation.

2017 Honda Civic Coupe Spotted

Prospective car

We know we’re not even halfway into 2015 yet, but the car world moves fast. While the 2016 Honda Civic has just recently debuted—including the promise of the Type-R making its way to the American market—auto journalists have spotted what they believe to be the 2017 Honda Civic Coupe taking test drives, and we’ve got some highlights for you.

What the Spy Photos Show

The next-gen Honda Civic has been the talk of the town since the rumors about the Type-R started, but now that we have confirmation of what’s coming for 2016, there are a few things that don’t quite add up about the spy photos we’ve seen—and that’s why we think they’re for the 2017 Honda Civic Coupe.

It was tough to make out any details from the black plastic camouflage around the Honda, but based on the rumors of a new Civic being based off of the sporty CR-Z body style, we think you’re in for a coupe that is much more sports car style than practical two-door car, differentiating itself from the mid-size Accord even further.

From the spy photos, it looks like the Civic will have a much more aggressive grille design as well as a sleeker profile. While there is no guarantee that the wheels will be on the production model, the Coupe was sporting some nice alloys that are sure to turn heads. In fact, based on what we know of the 2016 Civic and the fact that this model looks substantially different—including those alloy wheels—we think this could be the next generation of the Civic Si Coupe.

We’ll know more by the end of the year, when it’s predicted that this vehicle will go on display, but for now, know that at some point in the future, the Civic will have one of the sportiest designs it has ever seen—and with Honda’s new turbocharged engines available, it’ll be a joy to drive, too.

The 660 HP Turbocharged Ferarri 488 GTB To Debut at Geneva Auto Show

Author JoeC    Category News     Tags

From the moment it made an appearance, the Ferarri 458 was known as the “finest driving car” on the market. While we were sad to find out that the 458 will be discontinued, we can’t wait for the Ferarri 488 GTB to take its place. The new Ferarri 488 GTB will debut at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show in March and is expected to deliver a stronger performance than the 458.Ferrari 488 GTB
<h2″>An Astounding Engine

Just like the Ferarri 458, the 488 GTB will be powered by a 3.9L turbocharged V8 engine that will crack out 660 hp and allow the car to achieve 62 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. Yes, those numbers are correct; there really is no other supercar out there with that kind of power. The 488 GTB will also produce 561 lb-ft of torque when coupled with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and variable torque management that will ensure smooth torque delivery.

An Impressive Drag Coefficient

Aside from its impressive turbocharged engine, the Ferarri 488 GTB will include a more precise and less invasive Side Slip Control 2 (SSC2) system that will integrate with the F1-Trac and E-Diff systems to provide excellent angle control and greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. In addition, the SSC2 will control active dampers to keep the 488 GTB flatter and more stable in corners.

Thanks to the smallest drag coefficient Ferarri has ever created, the 488 GTB produces 50% more downforce than the 458 and features active aerodynamics paired with a blown spoiler, base bleed side intakes, and a double front spoiler.

Improved Cabin

The interior of the 488 will be more refined with improved ergonomics than its 458 predecessor. It has also been redesigned with angled air vents, a new instrument panel, improved satellite control clusters, and a new interface and graphics on the infotainment screen. The 488 will also be equipped with a multifunctional steering wheel, wraparound seats, and a control switch bridge. In addition, drivers will notice a clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel as well as other classic Ferarri styling features.

Ferarri Perfects Perfection

We didn’t think life could get any better than the Ferarri 458 but apparently we were wrong. When the new Ferarri 488 GTB makes it way into the Geneva Auto Show, we’ll be updated with pricing information and more details on this exceptional sportscar. Stay tuned!

Is this the Smartest Rearview Mirror in the World?

Author JoeC    Category News     Tags

The 2014 SEMA show is over, and it has us wondering if we’ve just seen the smartest rearview mirror in the world. The SmartNav 5 from App-Tronics was awarded Best in Show and ?????????????????????????????????????????????????combines a police radar detector, a rearview camera, navigation, video recording software, and—of course—the ability to see what’s behind your car like a normal mirror.

The Latest in Auto Tech

Rearview cameras have been making their way into rearview mirrors for a while now to help give drivers a better view of whether or not they can safely back up, and App-Tronics looked at this new technology and asked “why not go further?”

Their SmartNav 5 brings the capabilities of a computer or your average infotainment system to your rearview mirror. By projecting a 5-inch screen into the middle of the mirror, App-Stronics gives you access to a variety of useful driving apps in addition to features like navigation and the police radar detector, but rather than let them get in the way, they are projected translucent on top of the mirror. This lets you still focus on the mirror until you need to focus on your app. Of course, the system also comes with a Bluetooth connection that connects through your audio system.

Then there’s the radar detector, which will display an alert on your rearview mirror whenever it detects radar in use. It also comes with a regularly updated record of speed traps.

With easily accessible buttons alongside the bottom of the mirror and a touchscreen interface, navigating this new mirror is about as intuitive as it can get. We can see why it took home the Best in Show award, and we can’t wait to see the SmartNav 5 in action in one of our vehicles.

New Apple Car Technology Coming this Fall

Author JoeC    Category News     Tags

Let’s not beat around the bush here: when it comes to the latest cars, trucks, and SUVs, everybody wants these vehicles to come loaded with the most up-to-date and advanced iPhone Appstechnological features available, especially when it comes to your mobile device. For Apple users, the wait is finally over as they will be able to integrate their iPhones with their automobiles.

Coming here at the end of 2014, iPhones will be integrated with select Pioneer stereo head units. CarPlay, as the technology is named, has been highly anticipated and drivers can’t wait until it is functional.

What Is CarPlay?

CarPlay will allow Apple iPhone users the ability to use their mobile device for things such as navigation, messaging, calling, and music, with an emphasis on voice command and not having to take your hands off of the wheel or your eyes off of the road. All you have to do is just plug your iPhone into a USB port and CarPlay delivers your apps in your car’s display.

With Siri voice control you can operate your apps using only your voice. This means you can set your navigation, music selection, or make a phone call all by just holding the voice control button on your steering wheel. If by chance your car has a touchscreen display, you can also use that to operate CarPlay, and the technology also works with knobs or other buttons in the car if you choose to use them instead.

Texting and driving is no longer an issue with CarPlay as Siri will not only read you incoming text messages aloud, but through voice command, you can keep the conversation going by sending outgoing text messages.

It’s worth noting that you need the iPhone 5 or a later version in order to have CarPlay capability.

A number of automakers have committed to offering this Apple technology, including Audi, BMW, Honda, Chevy, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota. To learn more about CarPlay and how this technology will work, you’re encouraged to visit any of your local car dealers.
